5 Foods That Are Not as Healthy as You Thought Unhealthy Foods

We hear all kinds of information about what’s healthy and what’s not, which foods to eat and which foods aren’t healthy. Marketing does a great job of helping sway our thinking and so we might think that a candy bar is bad but a granola bar is good. So you might be surprised to discover that these five foods that are commonly thought of being healthy are actually unhealthy foods.

#1 Granola
Granola is marketed as a healthy food choice, and while granola itself isn’t unhealthy it has a lot of calories in just a small serving. Just a ½ cup of granola has nearly 500 calories (without milk, sugar or anything else added). Prepackaged granola is almost always high in fat and sugar.

You can try taking control of your granola by eliminating prepackaged products and making up your own. Mix ½ cup of rolled oats with some blueberries or strawberries and a cup of unsweetened almond milk. You can also add a scoop of whey protein. Now put it in the fridge overnight and in the morning add a sprinkle of cinnamon and enjoy!

#2 Sushi
Fish is packed with healthy Omega 3 fatty acids and it is often high in protein too, and rice is healthy too, so it would make sense that sushi is healthy, right? Don’t be fooled by the combos on the menus. A sushi dinner like the shrimp tempura can have more than 500 calories in just a single roll.

You can avoid eating the American version of sushi, which is often covered in a number of different sauces like spicy mayo that are high in calories. Rather, opt for sashimi, which is the fish, but there’s no rice and no sauces. If you want rice, then opt for nigiri, which still avoids the use of sauces. If you want to avoid unhealthy foods, the best fish choices are tuna, mackerel and salmon.

#3 Yogurt
One of the most popular yogurts has the fruit at the bottom. What you might not realize is that some of the yogurts on the shelf have as much sugar as drinking a can of soda. For example, some brands of yogurt with fruit on the bottom have 140 calories and 25 grams of sugar, which is the equivalent of an 8 ounce can of Coke.

If you are eating yogurt and unable to lose weight or gaining weight you might want to start to read labels carefully. Instead of yogurt, consider cottage cheese. There is 13 grams of protein in ½ cup of cottage cheese and no sugar. Even Greek yogurt can’t compete. Then just add some fruit or a sprinkle of cinnamon and enjoy.

#4 Granola Bars
Many people choose a granola bar for breakfast or as a way to pick up your energy mid day. Unfortunately, this is such a sugar heavy choice that it won’t sustain your energy for long. Most granola bars have less than 4 grams of protein.

A better option is to cook up some hard boiled eggs. Peel them in advance and your snacks are ready to go. Just add a piece of fruit as you head out the door in the morning. The protein from the eggs will fill you and fruit provides you with fiber.

#5 Juicing
We hear a lot about juicing these days, as a way to load your body up on vitamins/minerals. Sadly, juicing does not provide you with the fiber that you will get if you eat the fruits and vegetables, which is removed when you juice.

A healthier option is to create a smoothie that is a blend of fresh fruits/vegetables so that you get the vitamins, minerals and fibers. Just add a scoop of whey and unsweetened almond milk or water for the perfect drink.

You can quickly see how we can be fooled into thinking foods we eat are healthy choices. It’s important that we understand that what appears to be a healthy food choice may not always be that. But in order to know what’s healthy and what’s not you will have to do your own research and not rely on what advertising is telling you is good for you.
