Lionel Messi Best Footballer in the World Does his HGH Use Give Him an Edge?

Few will argue with the fact that Lionel Messi is certainly the best footballer in the world. But some might say that’s because of his HGH (human growth hormone) use – that this has given him an unfair edge over his competitors. However, they would be wrong.

This sentiment often occurs because of a lack of understanding about what Lionel Messi was dealing with and how his play was affected. Lionel Messi was diagnosed with GHD (growth hormone deficiency), which has caused him to suffer from idiopathic short stature when he was a child. If his problems were just limited to being shorter than average, perhaps it could have been ignored, but there were other health issues, that included skin problems, teeth problems, poor vision, lower immunity and poor pituitary function. That meant that it was important that his condition be treated.

The most efficient treatment for GHD is HGH injections Like Saizen, Norditropin, Omnitrope and Genotropin which are expensive. These treatments were life changing for Lionel Messi, as they are for all who have GHD.

HGH Use is banned in just about all amateur and professional sports but we need to make a few things clear. First, it was likely that Messi discontinued his use of HGH after reaching adulthood. For years, FC Barcelona and his reps have made no comments pertaining to his medical treatments.

Messi might still suffer from GHD, so treatment with HGH might still be waranted. Indeed, if treatment needed to continue a player with a medical condition that’s been diagnosed by a medical doctor can apply for a therapeutic exemption use, which is likely to be accepted in a longstanding and well documented case like Messi’s.

The therapeutic exemption use is also called TUE and it can be granted to any player for use of a substance that’s banned if that substance is thought to be medically necessary. FIFA section 46 anti doping code has TUE provisions. Technically Messi required this waiver to have the medical treatments he needed exempted, but what’s unclear is whether this waiver was actually in place. It wasn’t until 2004 that WADA started testing for HGH, although it was much earlier when it was actually banned.

Messi’s use of HGH was never as a performance enhancer. Messi was prescribed the drug to treat his medical condition and under the care of physicians who monitored him. Because of it, today he is a normal human; 14 years after the treatment option became available to him. He is now 5’ 7” tall, which is average for Argentinean males. He was only 4’ 2” when he was diagnosed. But while he is normal as far as his physical presence, he is in no means normal when it comes to his talent.

Some of his talent comes from his height. Even with the 17” gain in height, Messi kept his low center of gravity. This isn’t uncommon in football or in Barca – this team has a number of small players that are their top players.

Using HGH in sports is highly controversial because of the benefits of HGH. Still it is not as uncommon as you might think. Just recently, Lance Armstrong made a confession that HGH was a key component in his sophisticated recovery system. Andy Pettitte is one of only a handful of players who have admitted to using a banned substance and he has now returned to his normal popularity level. His confession was the result of the Mitchell Report in which he was named. Today he still assures everyone that his use was minor to help recover from an injury.

What is troubling is the number of youth sports where the use of HGH can be found. The question becomes is there actually a medical need or is there simply a cultural advantage? Is it used as a medical treatment or a performance enhancement?

HGH use is increasing in society. Testosterone and HGH are both banned in all major sports, but advertisements continue to push for its use by highlighting the benefits from using it. You will even see these ads during sporting events. Clinics advertise the use of HGH just about everywhere, which raises the ethical question about how in one case it’s good but in the other it’s bad.

Right now, many consider Messi to be the best player in the game. He is certainly one of the greatest players of all times and he is even mentioned alongside countryman Diego Maradona at only 5’5”, as well as with the great players like Johan Cruyff, Zinedine Zidane, Van Basten and Pele. Bottom line – without this medicine we may have never seen Messi become the athlete that he is today.

The controversy surrounding HGH is not going to go away anytime soon and the skepticism related to whether HGH may have played an important role in Messi's career will remain even if it has no bearing. The controversy around whether HGH should be banned from sports will also continue. The reality is that HGH can play a positive role in injury recovery, among other things.
