New Dangers With Stimulants in Supplements Including HGH

Just this week, researchers discovered that there are a number of over the counter supplements that contain a synthetic version of one stimulant that has been banned because it causes bleeding in the brain, induces heart attacks and can cause death. The supplements using this ingredient claim they can boost weight loss, brain function and athletic performance, but at what cost.

The trouble is these products aren’t alone. The findings of this research fuel an increasing amount of evidence that is diminishing the value of all herbal supplements. With questionable efficacy and mystery ingredients, it’s understandable that this is the point we’ve reached. There are 18 to 20 percent of all Americans using herbal supplements and so a great deal of pressure is being put on the FDA to create and enforce stronger regulations for the herbal supplement market and to caution users of what they could be putting in their body.

"Consumers are trying to be in better shape and better health, but putting themselves at unnecessary risk," says Pieter Cohen, a physician at Harvard Medical School. "No risk is worth it if we don't know if it works. We're seeing designer stimulants only studied in a chemistry lab being placed in a mainstream item, and people unknowingly consuming it."

In just the past year, researchers have found 18 supplements that contain designer stimulants that contain meth like ingredients.

In this recent study, Cohen and his Michigan and the Netherlands colleagues discovered 13 to 120 milligrams DMBA, a synthetic stimulant, in 12 different over-the-counter supplements. The problem is that DMBA has the same chemical makeup as DMAA , which the FDA banned in 2013. DMBA is potentially more dangerous because its has not been tested in humans. The only studies that were done on DMBA was decades ago and it was on animals. It was found to have a similar effect on animals to amphetamines, with the potential to cause a fatal adrenaline rush. These supplements list a maximum daily intake of 26 to 320 mg of DMBA per day – however, this amount could be lethal.

The law dictating what ingredients can go into supplements are very minimal and are hardly every enforced. The FDA does not plan to crack down on supplements anytime soon. The problem is retailers often are not aware of the potential risk associated with the products they sell as they put their trust in the manufacturers that they are producing safe products.

All supplements should come under scrutiny. This does not apply to just any one supplement. The same applies when you are purchasing HGH supplements, because not all supplements are created the same. It’s the reason you should choose a supplement that has science behind it, that has been reviewed and scrutinized by the outside world and that has ingredients you know. If you don’t know the ingredients take the time to research what’s in the supplement, whether its an HGH supplement or another herbal supplement- by doing so you can reduce your risk of taking something that puts your health at risk.

However, you need to remember that not all ingredients are listed, which brings us back to choosing products that have science behind them and that have been thoroughly researched by outside bodies. There’s nothing worse than buying an herbal supplement or HGH supplement for its benefits and having it cause you serious health problems. Do your research – do your homework – stay safe!
