Superfoods – Real, Overrated, or Imagined

These days we seem to hear a great deal about superfoods, but it can be pretty confusing. You’ve the people who are the ‘rah rah’ team for superfoods. Then you’ve the people who claim that these foods aren’t as awesome as we are led to believe, and then there are the people that are said to simply imagine the benefits of these superfoods. So which is it? Are superfoods real, overrated or imagined? Glad you asked. Let’s delve in a little deeper.

Superfoods are packed with nutrition – the maximum nutritional benefit possible with the minimum calories. They contain all the elements that are necessary to have good health – vitamins, antioxidants, omega 3s, minerals, antioxidants, and on and on the list goes. So there’s nothing imaginary about these superfoods – they are real and they exist.

Blueberries

Let’s start with a look at blueberries. This is a top of the chart superfood. Some call it the superfood of all superfoods. It contains very little fat, very few calories, and it is high in fiber. It curbs hunger and it also promotes healthy digestion. The antioxidants attack cancer causing free radicals. The Vitamin C aids in collagen production to repair cells that are damaged and the anthocyanins reduce blood pressure and inflammation. That’s just one food – and look at all those benefits.

Salmon

Another popular superfood is salmon. It’s packed with vitamin B12 for blood cell and nerve health. Omega 3s prevent stroke and heart disease. Salmon also has Vitamin D. The niacin is used to convert carbohydrates to energy.

Pumpkin Seeds

The pumpkin seed is very versatile. Sometimes it is also called the pepitas and it has always been a treasured staple of the American aboriginal peoples for both its dietary and its medicinal properties. Finally, pumpkin seeds are getting the attention they deserve and now they are even classified as a superfood.

Pumpkin seeds are among the leaders of phytosterols, a naturally occurring compound that has known cholesterol-lowering properties. Phytosterols are currently being studied for their possible benefits in prostate health.

Pumpkin seeds are high in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, are a good source of minerals, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc and iron.

But that’s just three of many foods that are classified as superfoods. In fact, what was once a list of 10 foods now often exceeds 50 foods. So what makes a food become identified as a superfood? It’s hard to ignore all the advertising and marketing hype around superfoods.

Superfoods are nutritionally dense foods that provide a great deal of dietary and healing ability that far exceeds a typical food. They are powerful sources of vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, clean protein, enzymes, essential fatty and amino acids, good fats, and other nutrients that offer deep levels of nutrition.

In other words, superfoods are foods that go far above and beyond what a normal food offers. They are packed with the right stuff to help keep you healthy. There’s a long list of foods containing nutrients that allow them the title of superfood.

However, superfoods don’t have an absolute measurable benefit and they are very subjective in nature. This can lead to ambiguity and lack of good guidelines about what is to be classified as a superfood within the health industry. As a result there is a lot of hype, some foods are overrated, and some foods are imagined to be superfoods, when they really offer nothing that would make them a superfood. The market often misinforms customers leaving them confused and unsure.

Are superfoods real? Absolutely! Are superfoods overrated? Often normal foods are overrated by marketers making them appear as though they are superfoods. Are superfoods imagined? They can be. Everyday foods are sometimes thought to be superfoods.

By definition, superfoods contain more minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, and nutrients than most other food choices. So if it looks like a superfood, smells like a superfood and acts like a superfood, it probably is.
