Do people actually “release toxins” when they lose weight?

Many people believe that weight loss releases a build up of toxins within the fat cells. This is a great way to explain why you feel horrible during the process of doing a detox. Even though this obsession with toxins is slightly out of hand, there is actually truth to the concept and there’s more to it than just feeling lousy.

Backed by science, of course, there is evidence that specific chemicals called persistent organic pollutants actually gather inside fat cells, thus, releasing themselves into the bloodstream and organs. This happens specifically when a person loses a large amount of fat from the body. Though, this chemical isn’t technically a toxin. Toxins are biological, whereas persistent organic pollutants are man-made chemicals. There’s also additional evidence that these pollutants have great effects on the metabolism and liver in particular. So, if you’re interested in removing these chemicals from your body, here’s how it work and what you can do.

Persistent Organic Pollutants

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP) are chemical which is unable to break down easily. Once they’re inside the body, though they can break down, it takes a long time to achieve this. But what is a POP exactly? Well, POPs can include:

This is just an example of some of the chemicals which are included in POPs. Sadly, POPs are everywhere and are included in our food supply as well. Though researchers once thought that routes where exposing food to POPs, through time, they discovered that environmental exposure is another factor.

These pollutants are stored in your body fat. Since they don’t break down with ease, people are seeing an increase in the total POP burden of 3-5% each year, as they simply continue to accumulate over time without breaking down. Though you’re storing them in your body fat, the rest of your body is receiving low-exposure to them. This exposure is extremely dangerous as high concentrations of POPs are linked to an increased risk of chronic diseases and weight gain as they modify gene expression.

POPs and Weight Loss

As the evidence shows, it’s clear the human body is already struggling with having POPs in its system. However,  it can get worse, especially if you’ve lost a significant amount of weight and now, the POPs have nowhere to be stored and cannot be broken down quickly. From one study, it illustrated the two possible options of what can happen:

You can technically excrete POPs through your faecal matter, but it’s difficult to do and on top of that, it’s also a challenge to excrete the amount needed to leave your body.

This study researched 71 obese people and compared them to 17 thin controls. 35 people from the obese section had a bariatric surgery which on average, the participants lost 81 pounds. The study then analysed the results, this is what they found.

In conclusion, they weight-loss group had a higher concentration of POPs, specifically in higher risk areas such as the bloodstream after the weight loss.  This may be the answer as to why weight loss can affect the immune function.

What Can You Do?

You may be worried now, wondering what can you do to deal with POPs. Well, before we show you solutions, let’s do a quick recap. All of us, every single person is exposed to POPs, but people who have either lost or want to lose a significant amount of weight should be concerned. Weight loss releases POPs from the fat tissue and leaves a higher concentration throughout the body which leads to a higher risk of chronic diseases.

So, what can you do?

If you can, the best way to reduce POPs is to avoid exposure to them. However, we recognize that this isn’t possible. You cannot avoid POPs only by eating healthy and using natural cleaning and beauty products. Though, this does help.

What you’ll need to do is looking at a long-term solution to eliminating POPs. This means you’ll have to look to your government for assistance, support candidates which are more likely to take action on this issue or start your own campaign to ban POPs. At the end of the day, removing POPs from the environment works and is the best solution. Since the USA banned DDT, exposure dropped more than 200% and by 2000 the average American had 9 times lower levels in the bloodstream as they did prior to the ban.

There has been one small study which used 6 subjects and 6 control participants to study oolong tea enriched with polyphenols to see the effect on the body with regards to POPs. What was found was that oolong tea enriched with polyphenols did increase fat excretion into the faeces which helps the body eliminate POPs. However, the study is simply too small to prove anything.

Pay Attention to What You Eat

Another way to eliminate POPs is by looking at your dietary patterns. Fixating yourself on one food isn’t enough, you need to look at the bigger picture.

One review stated that anti-inflammatory diets which are high in antioxidants and Omega-3 fats can help reduce POPs. Anti-inflammatory diet is actually putting water on the fire. Foods which are inflammatory simply add more exposure to POPs which is what you don’t want.

Though we still have a long ways to go with POPs, one thing about this discussion is very clear: we need to focus on the quality of our diets. Weight loss isn’t bad, however, you need to make sure that you’re not exposing yourself to more toxins in the process.
