Is HGH The Same As Steroids? Read This To Find Out!

Comparing Human Growth Hormone and Steroids

For some people, the line between human growth hormone and steroids is blurry. So they simply take the two as one and the same. This conclusion is not correct. While both have certainly similarities, they are significantly different from each other. This piece is aimed at helping you understand HGH and steroids better so that you can easily tell the differences.

What are steroids?

It is appropriate to start by first defining or describing steroids. These are generally organic compounds that are described based on their formation or chemical structure. They feature 17 carbon atoms set in four conjoined rings. Essentially, steroids are defined based on how they are formed. Hundreds of these are present in animals (including man), plants and fungi. Examples include testosterone, progesterone and cholesterol.

But whenever people talk about steroids, two main types usually come to the fore. These are: corticosteroids and anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS). Corticosteroids are more popularly used in medicine for treating inflammation, swelling and associated conditions. Anabolic steroids, on the other hand, are mostly used for building muscle mass and enhancing performance. It is this latter variant that is often compared to human growth hormone.

What is HGH?

This is a hormone that serves many useful purposes in the human body. HGH is a polypeptide – it comprises of proteins or amino acids. Specifically, it is made up of 191 amino acids. It is often called the chief or key hormone because it regulates a host of vital processes and functions in the body. As the name indicates, the natural substance is needed for healthy growth and development. It is need for cell repair and reproduction and bone mineral density improvement among other benefits.

Children who lack sufficient amount of the peptide will find it very difficult reaching normal adult height. It was in order to combat this and other possible issues that scientists produced a synthetic variant known as somatropin. This is practically the same as that which is produced in the body, known as somatotropin. The synthetic variant is injected into the body to deal with deficiency issues. Healthy bodybuilders and athletes are known to use somatropin for illegal purposes such as muscle building and performance enhancement.

How are they similar?

It is not uncommon to find people taking growth hormone for steroids, and vice versa. This confusion can even be observed in the media every now and again. What do these two share in common that make people to take one for the other? The following are major similarities between steroids and HGH.

Natural synthesis – The two substances are naturally synthesized and secreted within the body. Corticosteroids are produced in the cortex of the adrenal glands. Anabolic androgenic steroids are also stimulated within the body to control the production of testosterone. In its own case, growth hormone is produced in the anterior part of the pituitary gland in the brain. Both steroids and HGH are, of course, available in artificially synthesized forms as well.

Medical uses – Both substances also have medical conditions or issues they are used to treat. Corticosteroids help with conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and some others that are related to inflammation. Anabolic steroids are prescribed in situations where the body does not produce sufficient hormone, more specifically testosterone. Growth hormone is used to treat stunted growth and other conditions that have to do with severe deficiency of the substance.

Anabolic properties – This is arguably the main reason why HGH and steroids are thought to be one and the same. They both produce anabolic effect – that is, they can build up muscles and other body tissues. They both force your body to burn fat to reveal lean muscle mass. This is why many competitors and bodybuilders make use of them. Needless to say it is the same reason their usage is banned in many sports.

How is HGH different from steroids?

The fact that steroids are generally defined based on their chemical structure alone goes to show that they are different from HGH. But in addition, we consider below some factors that further differentiate the two.

Side effects

Steroids are known to give rise to severe and, sometimes, irreversible side effects. This is because they are very powerful compounds, the reason doctors do not often prescribe them. The possible side effects include:

• Acne
• Hair loss
• Swollen or shrunken testicles
• Gynecomastia (enlargement of breasts in male)
• Irregular menstrual cycle
• Difficulty in urinating
• Impotence, which may be permanent
• Deepening of voice in females
• Reduction in female breast size
• Liver damage
• High cholesterol
• Mood swings
• Growth retardation in adolescents

While the greater emphasis is usually on steroids, growth hormone does have its side effects as well. You are more likely to experience these when you take synthetic HGH injections. They include:

• Carpal tunnel syndrome
• Joint pain
• Nausea
• Fluid retention in joints
• Abnormal bone growth, such as in the jaw or nose
• Promotion of cancerous growths
• Greater risk of diabetes

It should be noted that these HGH side effects are more likely when you take somatropin injections. If you are not suffering serious medical deficiency, you will do well to stick to an HGH releaser.

Addiction

There appears to be potential for addiction when using steroids. As a result, you may experience withdrawal symptoms if you were to stop using them. This is not the case at all with growth hormone. The latter is just a regular substance needed to promote good health and deliver other benefits. Although regulated by the FDA, HGH may not really be considered a drug, at least not in the same light as steroids.

Other benefits

Growth hormone offers more benefits to the body than steroids. While the latter are known more for promoting male characteristics, improving physique, and enhancing performance, the former does more than that. One of the other benefits of HGH you may have already heard about is how its helps to slow aging. This one is well known by many as we often hear reports of celebrities using the hormone to promote younger look.

The following are some other purposes growth hormone may serve in your body:

• Regulation of cholesterol levels
• Increase in energy levels
• Improvement of bone mineral density
• Regulation of blood pressure
• Boosting of cardiac output
• Better sleep quality
• Mood improvement
• Enhancement of mental health and recall capacity
• Promotion of healthy skin and nails
• Improvement in sexual performance

We hope by now you can clearly see that HGH is not the same thing as steroids. Both are produced in the body and you can also supplement them with synthetic variants. But when it comes to benefits, growth hormone is clearly the better option. It is commonly believed that they are safer as well.

You may experience little or no side effects when you use an HGH supplement or releaser to boost levels. GenF20 Plus is a good example of such products for persons interested in boosting hGH levels for health or esthetic reasons. Offerings such as this merely stimulate your pituitary gland to stimulate more growth hormone. They do not replace natural hGH as is the case with injections. This makes them safer. HGH supplements also cost just a fraction of the cost of somatropin injections.
