Unhealthy Dieting Trends You Need to Ignore

Dieting offers you a great way to shed unnecessary fats, stay in good shape, look smart, and enjoy overall good health. There are numerous diet plans for those trying to deal with some form or level of obesity. Some of these are easier while some are harder to abide by. A number of these diet plans are outright absurd and dangerous to your health. Many still follow these unhealthy diet plans in their desperation to lose weight, without realizing what risk they are exposing themselves to. We present some of these unhealthy dieting trends and practices that you would be better off without. Tapeworm Diet

HCG Diet

The hCG diet is a very low-calorie one requiring daily intake of just between 500 and 800 calories. This is combined with injections of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a pregnancy hormone. Now, several things are just not right with this diet. The injections involved are quite expensive to start with. Even if you can afford paying for the injections, you may be paying for trouble. This is because scientists do not know yet if the hormone is safe for those who do not naturally produce it but desire to inject it. The very low-calorie nature of the hCG diet is another cause for concern. Granted that calories contribute to obesity, they are still needed for proper functioning of the body. Daily calorie intake less than 1,000 calories is unhealthy and risky.

Raw Food Diet

There are those who have said so much about how a raw food diet could be the magic weight loss remedy. These people emphasize the importance of obtaining most of your calorie needs from uncooked and unprocessed foods. The kinds of foods that qualify for inclusion in a raw food diet are those that have not been heated above 118 degrees. The diet is very rich in plant-based foods, including fruits, vegetables, grains and beans.

Raw food diet is not entirely bad or unhealthy, so long you do not take things to the extreme. Experts recommend consumption of foods that have not been overly processed in order to maintain healthy body weight. But it is also known that cooking and processing renders some unhealthy compounds in foods inactive. They also improve the bioavailability of some vital nutrients in foods, especially the phytonutrients. So a strict raw food diet is not advised.

Cabbage Soup Diet

Variety, they say, is the spice of life. You do not necessarily need to sacrifice this just to be able to shed body fat, but that is what this diet requires. Cabbage soup diet is one of several single-food-focused fad diets out there that are being promoted for weight loss. The soup is actually not made entirely of cabbage; it has several other vegetables to go with it. It is to be consumed for seven consecutive days. While the cabbage soup diet is rich in nutrients and water, it could turn out counter-productive due to its lack of variety. You may easily lose interest in it before completing the recommended course and you will find yourself right where you started. Besides, the diet looks more like one intended for cleansing in preparation for extreme weight loss than a meal plan.

Master Cleanse Diet

This diet trend is really big in southern California. It involves drinking a mixture of squeezed lemons, maple syrup, and pepper (cayenne) several times in a day for 10 straight days. Also, master cleanse dieters are required to take a herbal laxative tea before bed and a little over a liter of salt water on waking in the morning. This is done to cleanse waste or toxins from the gastrointestinal tract and bowels. Regardless of the word "cleanse," this diet could be harmful to your health. There is no scientific evidence suggesting the GI tracts and organs need assistance in eliminating waste and toxins from the body.

Another worrying thing about the master cleanse diet is that it lacks certain essential nutrients. These include protein, iron and calcium. In addition, calories obtainable from the diet could be as low as about 650. You are likely to lose lean muscle mass with this diet and, when you are done, you are likely to gain more body fat than before. Diet experts do not recommend following this diet for more than two days.

Breatharian Diet

This is one of the most absurd fad diets ever. The reason for this being that breatharian diet is intended to help you lose weight only if you can go without food and water. It is hard enough when told to avoid certain obesity-inducing foods. How harder would be to not eat anything at all? Breatharianism is the belief that air and sun alone suffice for human survival. Let's face it, this is no diet plan; it's simply an easy route to starvation. People can only do this on religious grounds. It is highly risky to do without food and water for long. You may survive a few weeks not taking food, but you will survive for only a few days without water. This diet is just a no-no.

Hollywood Diet

This is one of those so-called weight loss miracles. Created by Jamie and Larry, Hollywood Diet is claimed to be capable of helping you shed between two to nine pounds in body weight. The diet comprises small selection of cookies and shakes. The calorie count of the diet is quite low and this is a major cause of concern. You will only be starving yourself with a diet such as this. Possible complications include nausea, diarrhea and fatigue. Most of the weight loss you will notice in the first days would be water weight. It is considered rather hazardous following the Hollywood Diet for more than two days.

Ear Stapling Diet

Ear stapling diet is another of those odd diets that have been proposed for dealing with obesity. By the way, if you are hoping the diet would not reflect its name, stop hoping because it does. You are definitely going to have your ear stapled. The idea behind this diet is believed to have originated from acupuncturists, who believe that the stomach – and by implication, appetite – is controlled by a mid-ear cartilage. The ear stapling diet involves leaving a thin, surgical staple in the tragus section of the ear for some months to control food urge. This practice has no scientific evidence backing its efficacy. It also opens up possibilities of developing ear deformities and serious infections. The risk is definitely not worth it.

Tapeworm Diet

Yuck! Could you just imagine how disgusting it would be eating tapeworms? Nevertheless, some people are willing to brave eating these parasites all in the bid to lose weight. This is highly risky. It is bad enough for tapeworms to find their way into the digestive system through consumption of uncooked food and infected meat, let alone ingesting them purposely. Actually, you may not need to eat adult tapeworms. You only need to take tapeworm cyst pills that grow into the adult parasites in your intestines. The tapeworms eat the food in the host's stomach and are excreted using an anti-parasite pill after goal has been achieved. Several awful side effects, including vomiting, epilepsy and possible death, could result from tapeworm diet. Whatever success recorded from this diet is erased once you stop it. Due to its risky nature, it has been banned in the U.S.

Werewolf Diet

The Werewolf Diet calls for fasting during a new or full moon. It is based on the idea that the weight of water ebbs and flows same way as the tide. So when you fast, this can cleanse water weight and toxins out of your body at a faster pace. Short fasts are known to be beneficial to health, but there is no science behind fasting during a full or new moon for internal cleansing. The kidneys are always working round the clock to eliminate harmful substances from our bodies.

Cotton Ball Diet

This is a very weird diet that involves consuming five cotton balls soaked in lemonade, orange juice, or a smoothie in a sitting, according to ABC. You may find it hard to believe that people actually do things like this to burn body fat. Well, the idea is that you will feel full from doing this without gaining weight. Really? Why would anybody eat clothing material and expect nothing wrong to happen? Cotton balls are capable of clogging your intestinal tract and, if care is not taken, could lead to death. Please disregard this diet!

K-E Diet

Also known as the feeding tube diet, this diet involves carrying out feeding through a feeding tube. How far can you go to lose weight? If very far, then the K-E diet should be just perfect for you. A solution containing proteins, fats and very low calories is pumped through a tube into your stomach via your nose. Weird. This is expected to cause your body to go into ketosis, resulting in faster fat burning rate. However, there is no evidence that this will help towards achieving long-term weight loss goal. You may also suffer adverse reactions such as dizziness, dehydration, constipation and kidney stones as a result.

Sleeping Beauty Diet

You may consider this a clever approach to dieting, but it also comes with its issues. The sleeping beauty diet involves drugging yourself to sleep so that you can skip some meals and not add more weight. You may continue sleeping for days after sedation, at the end of which you are expected to wake up slimmer. It sounds easy, right? The problem here is that you can suffer dehydration and slower metabolism when you do not eat or drink for days. There is also no telling what damage the drugs you take can cause to your internal organs and there is possibility of fatality.

It is estimated that Americans spend up to $20 billion each year on weight loss programs, majority of which do not even work. Fad diets are practically useless in your goal to shed weight. You should instead focus on maintaining a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables and other healthy food choices. Monitor your portions carefully and exercise regularly. You stand better chance of having a healthy weight and enjoying overall good health doing this.
